Disc couplings

Disc couplings, like many couplings, represent a critical part of industrial applications. These couplings designed to offer reliable and precise torque transmission even under the most demanding conditions. By using a series of metallic lamells, these couplings enable compensation for various types of misalignment.

What is a disc coupling?

A disc coupling is a type of mechanical coupling used to transmit torque between two shafts, while being able to compensate for various types of misalignment. It consists of several discs (also called lamell) which are interconnected and can move independently of each other. This provides flexibility and precision in power transmission. Multi-plate clutches are particularly known for their ability to handle high torques and to operate under demanding conditions.

Disc couplings offer several unique features that make them suitable for various applications:

  • High torque capacityDisc couplings can handle high torques, making them ideal for heavy industrial applications.
  • Misalignment compensation: They can compensate for axial, angular and radial misalignments, increasing system flexibility and service life.
  • Low mass with light weight: The small diameter, low mass design makes them efficient and responsive.
  • Maintenance free: Disc couplings are maintenance-free thanks to their robust metal construction.
  • Resistance to dirt and temperature: Their metallic construction makes them resistant to dirt and high temperatures, which is important in harsh environments.

How does a disc coupling work?

A disc coupling works by transmitting torque between two shafts via a pack of metallic plates. These plates can move independently of each other, allowing the clutch to compensate for various types of misalignment. The adjustment is made with compensation for axial, radial and angular errors. This makes disc couplings particularly effective in applications where high demands are placed on precision and durability.

Compared to one elastic coupling, which transmits torque via elastic materials such as rubber or plastic, the multi-plate clutch offers a significantly higher torque capacity and resistance to wear. Elastic couplings are more flexible but cannot handle as high loads and often require more maintenance as the elastic elements can wear out and need to be replaced regularly. Lamella couplings, with their robust metal construction, are therefore better suited for heavy and demanding industrial applications.
